Danny Strong Discusses Cold War Themes, Bryce Pinkham, and Chess Musical
Danny Strong is reviving the musical Chess, a piece often linked to the Cold War. Originally a concept album, Chess was created by Tim Rice and the famed ABBA duo, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The musical first graced the West End in 1986 and later attempted a Broadway run in 1988, though it has not seen a revival on Broadway since.
Chess and Cold War Themes
Strong, recognized for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls, is also known for his writing on Dopesick and Empire. He describes Chess as a “Brechtian Cold War history play,” and he is determined to show its relevance today. In his recent conversation with Filmogaz.com, he elaborated on his vision for a new adaptation.
Musical Inspirations
Strong’s interest in reviving Chess stems from his love for the music. He admires the dynamic score that combines varying musical styles. He appreciates the operatic elements alongside ABBA-like pop tunes and even Russian-inspired dirges. Strong noted, “It feels like part of Tim Rice’s canon,” indicating his deep respect for the work.
Incorporating Historical Events
Strong decided to integrate significant moments from the Cold War into the musical structure. The first act delves into the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II), highlighting the challenges of nuclear proliferation. This act is intertwined with the chess match’s narrative.
The second act presents the Able Archer 83 incident. This historical event, marked by a nuclear misunderstanding, escalated tensions during the Cold War. Strong believes this progression captures the essence of the era and how it culminated in the end of the Cold War.
Finding the Right Tone
Strong emphasized the importance of humor within Chess. He observed that audiences often find it hard to connect with the musical because it can feel overwhelming. He collaborated with Bryce Pinkham, who plays the Arbiter, to create a blend of comic sensibilities. This approach contrasts with the serious topics addressed, but it aims to engage the audience effectively.
A Look Back at Gilmore Girls
In addition to discussing Chess, Strong reflected on his time working on Gilmore Girls, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. He did not anticipate the show’s lasting impact but admired its clever writing and stylized performances. Strong noted how the show was initially perceived as a teen series, but he recognized its depth and nuance.
Future Projects
Strong is also working on an original musical called Galileo, which focuses on the historical battles of Galileo regarding scientific theories. After a successful run at Berkeley Rep in 2024, he hopes for a Broadway opportunity, with prospective dates slated for winter 2026.
