Donovan Carrillo Makes Olympic History: First Mexican in Two Figure Skating Finals
Donovan Carrillo, a 26-year-old figure skater from Guadalajara, Mexico, has made Olympic history by becoming the first Mexican to qualify for two consecutive finals at the Winter Olympics. Competing at the Milan Cortina Winter Games, he secured his place in the men’s final after scoring 75.56 points in the short program.
Historic Achievement at the Milan Cortina Olympics
On Tuesday, Carrillo qualified for the final by finishing 23rd out of 39 competitors, allowing him to advance as one of the top 24. Although he trailed the U.S. favorite Ilia Malinin, who scored 108.16 points, Carrillo’s accomplishment highlights his dedication to a sport that is not widely practiced in Mexico.
After completing his routine, Carrillo expressed his pride for Mexico, exclaiming, “This is for all of Mexico! Dreams do come true!” His performance drew praise from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who remarked that Carrillo is “a great source of pride for Mexico.”
Challenges Faced by Carrillo
Despite his success, Carrillo faced challenges during his routine. He struggled with his triple axel, requiring him to use both hands to avoid a fall. However, he regained his composure and finished strong, showing resilience in the face of adversity. “Of course, things could have gone better, they always can,” he reflected after his performance.
Looking Forward: The Final Competition
The final competition is scheduled for Friday, where Carrillo aims to improve upon his 22nd-place finish at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. His journey to Milan Cortina was supported by a Solidarity Olympic Grant, which assisted him with expenses related to training, equipment, and travel.
Financial Backing and Support
In addition to the Olympic grant, Carrillo receives a monthly stipend of 12,000 pesos (approximately $696) from Mexico’s National Sports Commission (Conade). This support has been crucial for Carrillo, especially considering the lack of a robust ice skating culture in Mexico.
- Most ice rinks in Mexico are located in shopping malls.
- Training conditions differ drastically from those at international competitions.
- Lower-quality ice presents unique challenges for skaters.
Despite these obstacles, Carrillo has persevered and made remarkable strides in his figure skating career. His journey demonstrates that with hard work and determination, athletes from any background can achieve their Olympic dreams.
