The 31-year-old scored an impressive 94.00 in his first run. This remarkable feat included a switch backside double cork 1440, a trick James executed for the first time in a competition in Switzerland last month. Although he had a setback in his second run, his initial score remained the highest of the night.

Qualification Round Highlights

  • Scotty James: 94.00
  • Yuto Totsuka: 91.25
  • Ryusei Yamada: 90.25
  • Ayumu Hirano: 85.50 (seventh place)

Teammate Valentino Guseli also made a strong showing, qualifying in sixth place. Guseli expressed anticipation for the impending finals, considering James the top favorite. “That qualies was like a finals; the real final will be epic,” he remarked.

James has his sights set on achieving gold, which would make him Australia’s most decorated Winter Olympian. He aims to surpass the records of freestyle skier Dale Begg-Smith and snowboarder Torah Bright, both of whom have won multiple medals.

Competitive Landscape

Reflecting on the competitive nature of the halfpipe event, James noted its increased intensity. “Halfpipe riding at the Olympics is probably the most competitive it’s ever been,” he stated. He acknowledged that several athletes, especially the top six, have a real shot at victory.

James is keen to bring his best performance when the finals take place, emphasizing the importance of strategic preparation. As the stakes rise, all eyes will be on him and his competitors in what promises to be an extraordinary showdown. The final event is set to occur on Friday at 0530 AEDT.
