Kayo Increases Monthly Premium by $6 Ahead of AFL Season
Sports streaming service Kayo has officially raised its monthly premium subscription by $6. The new price of $45.99 comes just ahead of the eagerly anticipated AFL season. Kayo cites increased costs associated with acquiring sports rights for this adjustment.
Kayo’s Price Increase Ahead of AFL Season
This price hike reflects Kayo’s substantial investment in various major sports, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. A Kayo representative emphasized that despite the increase, the entry-level monthly subscription remains unchanged, ensuring access to 50 live sports for fans.
Expanded AFL Offerings
The AFL’s 2023 season promises to be exciting, featuring a new State of Origin clash this weekend. Additionally, fans can look forward to an expanded finals series that will include a wildcard round. Significant AFL games, like the Collingwood versus Essendon Anzac Day match, will still be available for free-to-air viewing.
Changes to Broadcast Availability
Starting in 2025, Saturday’s home-and-away matches will be restricted to paid services only in Victoria. They will be accessible exclusively through Kayo or Foxtel, with a similar restriction applying across Australia for the first eight rounds of the season.
Ownership and Investment
Kayo was once part of the News Corp Australia group but is now primarily owned by DAZN, which acquired its parent company, Foxtel, two years ago. A Kayo spokesperson mentioned that these changes are essential to address rising sports rights costs and to support continual investments in production quality and technology.
- New Premium Price: $45.99 per month
- Previous Price: $40 per month
- Increased Sports Offerings: New AFL Origin clash and expanded finals series
- Ownership: Majority owned by DAZN since acquisition of Foxtel
With these adjustments, Kayo aims to enhance its service for sports enthusiasts, ensuring a rich viewing experience while managing the financial realities of sports broadcasting.
