MLB Reveals ABS Challenge System Guidelines for 2026 Season
Major League Baseball (MLB) has officially clarified the guidelines for the automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system, set to make its debut on Opening Day of the upcoming season. The new rules were announced at the Cactus League media day and will be in effect as the league enters spring training.
Key Features of the ABS Challenge System
- Extra Innings Challenges: Teams will receive one challenge per extra inning, even if they have exhausted their two normal challenges in the prior nine innings. However, challenges will not accumulate if they are not used.
- Umpire Discretion: Umpires can exercise discretion regarding plays on the bases when a pitch challenge is occurring. For instance, a successful challenge on a pitch will not affect a stolen base attempt that is already in progress.
- Pitches by Position Players: Challenges will not be allowed if a position player is on the mound.
- Individual Strike Zones: The league will measure each player’s standing height to establish customized strike zones, which will be slightly smaller than the traditional umpire-defined zone.
- Simultaneous Challenges: If both an ABS challenge and a video replay challenge are submitted for the same play, the ball-strike call will be made first, followed by the review for the bases.
Obstruction Rule Adjustment
In addition to the ABS guidelines, MLB has updated its obstruction rule. If a runner intentionally makes contact with a fielder to prompt an obstruction call, the runner will be ruled out. Umpires have been instructed to disregard such attempts to enhance player safety and the integrity of the game.
Base Coach Requirement
Another important update involves base coaches, who will now be required to remain within their designated boxes until a pitch is thrown. This change aims to promote fair play and maintain consistent gameplay.
As MLB implements these significant changes for the 2026 season, fans and teams alike look forward to seeing how the ABS challenge system impacts the game.
