Portage Announces Proposal for New Bears Stadium
Portage, Indiana, has proposed a bold initiative to attract the Chicago Bears. The city has launched an ambitious plan for a new stadium, termed “Halas Harbor,” aiming to offer the Bears a unique opportunity.
Details of the Proposed Stadium
The proposal revolves around a $5 billion stadium project set on a 300-acre site along the Burns Waterway. This initiative emphasizes that the stadium would be fully financed without any burden on taxpayers.
- Project Name: Halas Harbor
- Proposed Cost: $5 billion
- Site Area: 300 acres
- Financing: Private funding by businessman Lou Weisbach
- Rent: The stadium would be rent-free for the Bears
According to the plans, non-football revenue generated by the stadium will be used to cover its costs. Weisbach has described this funding initiative as the “financing plan of the future.”
Next Steps and Stakeholder Engagement
Construction could start as early as June, contingent on approvals. Mayor Austin Bonta has confirmed that the Bears are aware of this proposal. Weisbach plans to discuss the details with Bears president and CEO Kevin Warren, alongside Indiana Governor Mike Braun.
While the Bears have not commented on the Portage proposal, they have previously expressed interest in exploring options in Northwest Indiana, including sites in Hammond and Gary.
Stadium Location and Accessibility
Portage’s proposed location is the most remote of the potential sites. Mayor Bonta highlighted the stadium’s accessibility via cars, trains, and boats, making it easier for fans to reach the venue.
Current Situation and Legislative Context
The Bears currently own 326 acres in Arlington Heights but are exploring ways to negotiate public funding and property tax rates. Discontent with slow progress on their current plans prompted the Bears to consider building in Indiana, which led to the introduction of Senate Bill 27 aimed at establishing a stadium authority.
However, time is of the essence. The Indiana legislative session concludes on February 27, making it urgent for Portage to move forward with its proposal. This development comes on the heels of Iowa politicians also proposing incentives for NFL stadium construction.
As the NFL Scouting Combine approaches, the outcome of these proposals remains uncertain. Elected officials from surrounding areas, including Arlington Heights, are actively seeking to promote legislative support for such projects.
