WhatsApp Web Transforms with Major Upgrade

WhatsApp, the leading messaging app globally, is set to enhance its web platform significantly. With over three billion monthly active users, it has primarily been known for text messaging and mobile communications. However, a major upgrade has introduced audio and video calling features to the WhatsApp web app.

Major Upgrade: Audio and Video Calls on WhatsApp Web

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is gradually rolling out audio and video calling capabilities for individual chats on its web app. This feature is currently available to users enrolled in the beta program, with plans for nationwide rollout in the coming weeks.

How It Works

  • Users will notice a video call icon at the top of individual chats.
  • Two options will be available: to place a voice call or a video call.
  • All calls retain end-to-end encryption, much like the desktop and mobile applications.

Moreover, the web app includes a screen sharing capability during video calls. This allows users to share their computer screen with other contacts seamlessly.

Future Features: Group Calls

WhatsApp is also developing group chat calls for the web app. Although not available at launch, this anticipated feature will allow users to connect with up to 32 participants in a single call. This enhancement will cater to those who prefer utilizing WhatsApp from their browsers, particularly benefiting Linux users who lack a dedicated desktop app.

Joining the Beta Program

To experience these new features, users need to enroll in the WhatsApp web app beta. Here’s how:

  • Open the WhatsApp web app.
  • Go to the settings menu.
  • Select “Help” and then choose “Join beta.”

Upon joining, a “Beta” label will appear, indicating access to the latest features, including call options in individual chats.

WhatsApp’s upgrade to its web app marks a significant development for users who prefer browser-based communication. With seamless integration of calling features, WhatsApp continues to provide enhanced connectivity for its vast user base.
