Laos Aims for 6 Million Tourists by 2026, Expects 2 Million from China

Laos is setting ambitious tourism goals, aiming to attract between 5 and 6 million international visitors by 2026. A significant portion of this growth is expected to come from China, with projections of around 2 million Chinese tourists contributing to the total. This initiative coincides with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and China, alongside increasing travel interest spurred by the Lao-China railway.

Railway Impact on Tourism

The Lao-China railway has substantially contributed to boosting tourism in the country. Since its launch in late 2021, approximately 12 million passengers have traveled within Laos. The route connecting Vientiane to Kunming in China has seen a consistent rise in passenger numbers and freight transport.

  • Domestic freight operations: 16 million tonnes of goods transported.
  • Total freight along the broader route: approximately 72 million tonnes.

Authorities note that the railway has decreased travel times and logistics costs, making it easier for tourists to visit Laos. Improved transport links have made Laos a viable option for travelers seeking multi-country itineraries in the region.

Future Initiatives

To enhance connectivity further, the government plans to integrate the Lao-China and Lao-Thailand railways, positioning Laos as a key regional transport hub. Additionally, the construction of the Lao-Vietnam railway is set to commence soon, with a feasibility study for a Vientiane-Pakse railway currently underway.

Tourism Objectives for 2026-2030

Looking beyond 2026, Laos aims to welcome 22 million international visitors from 2026 to 2030, projecting revenues of around USD 8 billion during this period. Domestic tourism is also set to grow, with expectations for 11 million trips valued at approximately USD 5 billion.

  • Tourism growth target: annual expansion of at least 6% through 2030.
  • Key attractions driving interest: heritage sites, natural sites, and cultural tourism.

With current trends showing steady recovery post-pandemic, authorities are optimistic about sustaining this momentum, making tourism a vital driver of economic growth in Laos.
