‘Clash of Clans’ Creator: AI Enhances Games, Doesn’t Harm Them
Ilkka Paananen, Chief Executive of Supercell, the studio behind popular mobile games like Clash of Clans, discussed the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in gaming. He views AI as a “massive opportunity” that can significantly benefit both well-established developers and new startups. His recent statements highlight an optimistic outlook for the gaming industry amidst challenges presented by AI technology.
AI’s Impact on the Gaming Industry
Paananen’s comments emerged following the launch of Google’s Project Genie, a new technology designed to create dynamic 3D virtual worlds from minimal input. This innovation stirred concerns in the market, leading to significant stock declines for major gaming companies. For instance, Roblox fell 12%, Take-Two Interactive dropped 10%, and Unity also saw a 12% decrease in market value.
Supercell’s Strategic Investment
In light of these developments, Supercell has committed to increasing its investment in game development. Last year, the company doubled its investment and plans to do so once more this year. Despite a reported 4% decline in sales during the previous year, Paananen emphasized the importance of innovation within the mobile gaming sector.
- Supercell’s headcount rose 30% to 890 employees in 2023.
- The company generated €2.65 billion in revenue in 2025, a 4% decline from the previous year.
- Underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization increased by 6% to €932 million.
Embracing AI While Retaining Creativity
Paananen also noted that Supercell remains dedicated to a human-centric approach, encouraging creative teams to leverage AI as a tool rather than enforcing its mandatory use. This philosophy aligns with broader industry trends, as Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, also expressed support for generative AI to enhance business efficiency.
Looking Ahead
Despite facing challenges, Supercell continues to thrive, with stable performance from games like Brawl Stars and a resurgence in Clash Royale. Even after halting development on a new title, Squad Busters, which generated over $100 million, the company remains optimistic about future prospects.
As the gaming landscape evolves with advancing technologies, the integration of AI is poised to redefine gameplay experiences. Industry leaders believe that these changes will foster innovative titles and a stronger connection with players, ultimately benefiting the entire market.
