Maui County Faces Severe Weather: Final Update for Feb. 9
Maui County is experiencing significant impacts from severe weather as it continues to recover from recent storms. The final update for February 9, 2026, details closures, road advisories, and ongoing recovery efforts.
Maui County Facilities and Park Updates
All County of Maui offices across Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi are expected to reopen on Tuesday, February 10. The Olowalu Recycling and Refuse Convenience Center will also resume operations on that date.
County parks will undergo inspections by crews before their reopening. However, Kanahā Beach Park’s third entrance will remain closed due to a fallen tree. The resumption of permitted playing fields will depend on local flooding conditions.
Roadway Conditions and Advisories
The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) lifted a local-access-only restriction for Hāna Highway on February 9. This decision followed the National Weather Service’s (NWS) cancellation of a statewide Flood Watch and High Wind Warning. However, Ulaino and Waikoloa roads in Hāna remain closed due to flooding.
- Baldwin Avenue is shut down at Keʻe Road in Makawao due to downed utility lines.
- A fallen tree has blocked 1670 Piʻiholo Road in Olinda.

Water Supply Updates
The County of Maui Department of Water Supply is currently assessing damage to a water line in Honokōhau Valley. Repairs are contingent on river levels receding. A water buffalo has been placed at the nearby bus stop for public use.
Residents are encouraged to check the Hawaiʻi Department of Health’s brown water advisory for important updates.
Damage Assessment and Recovery Efforts
Local officials are collaborating with state partners to assess storm-related damages. Residents and businesses affected by the severe weather can submit reports through MEMA’s online portal. This data will aid in recovery efforts and resource allocation.
Emergency Response Measures
Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen declared an emergency on Saturday, enabling a swift response to the severe weather. As of February 9, the Emergency Operations Center was downgraded to partial activation.
Public Works crews are actively clearing roadways and maintaining drainage systems, while the Department of Water Supply has prepared backup generators.
Weather Conditions and Warnings
A Wind Advisory from the NWS remains effective until 6 p.m. on February 10, predicting wind speeds between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts possibly reaching 50 mph. The surf warning for east-facing shores of Molokaʻi, Maui, and Kahoʻolawe is also in effect.
Conditions leading up to these warnings resulted in power outages, roadway closures, and various damages across multiple islands.
