BBC Studios Chief Confirms United Effort for Doctor Who’s Future
Fans are eagerly anticipating the future of Doctor Who, especially after the upcoming Christmas special. Zai Bennett, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of BBC Studios Global Content, recently addressed concerns regarding the iconic series’ longevity.
Doctor Who’s Future: A Collaborative Effort
In an interview with Deadline, Bennett discussed the series’ future, particularly in light of the news that Disney will not be involved in any upcoming seasons. He emphasized, “We’re all in it together” when it comes to ensuring Doctor Who continues to thrive on screen.
Christmas Special and Beyond
- The Christmas special is set to be written by showrunner Russell T Davies.
- This will be the first major episode following the departure from the Disney partnership.
Before this announcement, Disney partnered on 26 episodes, contributing to two seasons featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. Despite the ending of the Disney deal, Kate Phillips, Chief Content Officer at the BBC, reassured fans, stating that the series remains a priority for the broadcaster.
Confirmed Commitment from BBC
Phillips had earlier stated, “Doctor Who is going nowhere.” She acknowledged the benefit of the Disney collaboration but promised that the show would continue regardless of external partnerships.
Exciting Developments in the Whoniverse
When the show returns, fans can expect engaging storylines. In Gatwa’s last episode, titled The Reality War, the Doctor regenerates into the beloved character of Rose Tyler, portrayed by Billie Piper. Piper expressed her excitement about returning, sharing, “To step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse.”
Doctor Who’s Return Date
Doctor Who is set to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas. As the show gears up for this momentous occasion, the future looks promising with ongoing commitment from BBC Studios.
