Smeding Highlights Solo Triumph, Proving Speed Skating Investment Worthwhile

Sixteen years ago, Sir Steve Redgrave proposed the creation of a dedicated 400m speed skating oval in the UK. He envisioned this facility as a catalyst for winning multiple Olympic medals within a decade. Redgrave urged that athletes from high-endurance sports, such as cycling and rowing, would excel in speed skating. This investment was aimed at elevating Britain’s competitiveness, particularly against nations like the Netherlands, which is set to achieve its 50th Olympic gold medal soon.

The Link Between Sports

Clara Hughes, a notable Canadian athlete, highlighted the adaptability between different sports. She successfully garnered Olympic medals in both summer and winter disciplines. This demonstrates that skills acquired in cycling or rowing could be effectively applied to speed skating.

Funding Challenges for Speed Skating

Despite its potential, speed skating struggles with funding from UK Sport, which typically emphasizes short-term successes. Only a small portion of the £1.9 million allocated to British Ice Skating is directed towards speed skating, in stark contrast to the £5.7 million that skeleton receives. Critics contend that speed skating, which offers 14 medal opportunities, should receive more financial backing than the skeleton, which has only three.

Smeding’s Challenges and Solutions

In pursuit of her speed skating ambitions, athlete Smeding, along with partner Cornelius Kersten, has started a coffee business to offset training costs. Following a serious hip injury, Smeding relocated from the Netherlands to Canada to train with coach Bart Schouten. This move provided her with a much-needed change in scenery and mindset, which she described as rejuvenating.

Fresh Start and Improved Performance

Since the relocation, Smeding has regained confidence in her skills. She expressed a newfound appreciation for her athletic journey. “You get a new appreciation for what you are doing and how privileged I am to live this life and compete with the best in the world,” she noted.
