Vernon Skier Elena Gaskell Seeks Redemption Four Years After Beijing Injury
After enduring a significant injury that sidelined her during the Beijing Winter Olympics, Vernon skier Elena Gaskell seeks redemption at the upcoming Milano-Cortina Games. The freestyle skier is set to compete for Canada in the slopestyle and big air events, with slopestyle qualifications beginning on Saturday.
Elena Gaskell’s Road to Recovery
Gaskell, 24, originally qualified for the Beijing Olympics four years ago, where she was considered a medal contender. However, just one day before her first event, she suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in her knee.
Facing Challenges After Injury
In the aftermath of her injury, Gaskell endured a difficult period while still present at the Olympics under strict COVID-19 protocols. She recalls feeling as though she was “living in a movie” when her dreams were abruptly shattered by her accident.
Gaskell later revealed that this challenging experience led to a low phase in her life, including feelings of depression. Yet, it motivated her to advocate for mental health awareness among athletes, ultimately contributing to her comeback.
Recent Achievements
- Gaskell secured a bronze medal at a World Cup competition in Aspen, Colorado, last month.
- She only resumed competing last October after suffering another ACL tear in her other knee.
Reflecting on her latest accomplishments, Gaskell expressed her determination to focus on success rather than fear of injury. She acknowledges the doubts she faced during her recovery but has learned to navigate her mindset better since her first injury.
Support from Family
This time around, Gaskell is not competing alone; she has her family by her side in Italy. Her father Ken noted the significance of their presence at this Olympics, given the absence of family support during her previous competition.
Gaskell is ready to take on the challenges of the Milano-Cortina Games with renewed optimism. As she competes in both the slopestyle and big air categories, all eyes will be on her quest for redemption.
