Gulfport’s Derick Hall Overcomes Birth Struggles to Shine in Super Bowl

Born in March 2001, Hall entered the world four months premature, weighing just 2 pounds, 9 ounces. His birth was alarming; he had no heartbeat and was given only a 1% chance of survival. Hall spent nearly five months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Memorial Hospital Gulfport, where dedicated medical staff provided the care he desperately needed.

Today, Hall stands tall at 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 254 pounds. His journey from almost not surviving to thriving is truly remarkable. According to his foundation, he defied a 99% chance of not walking or talking, proving that determination and community support can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

Giving Back to the Community

In June 2024, Hall launched the Derick Hall One Percent Foundation, a charity that focuses on supporting premature babies and their families. This initiative reflects his gratitude for the life-saving care he received in the NICU. The foundation’s activities include organizing food drives and supporting local school supply efforts.
