Valverde Talks Finals as Season Heats Up
Ernesto Valverde, the head coach of Athletic Club, emphasizes the urgency of victory as they prepare to face Levante at San Mamés. He stated that, although the league is in its 23rd round, discussions around finals have already begun. “It’s an incredibly important match for both us and them. We need the win and will do everything possible to achieve it,” he said during a press conference.
Key Insights from Valverde’s Press Conference
Valverde expressed that his focus is entirely on the impending match. He highlighted that the upcoming four matches will be against teams positioned lower in the table, including Levante, Oviedo, Elche, and Rayo Vallecano. Despite the home advantage at San Mamés, he noted, “Winning the fans over through our performance is crucial. The location doesn’t matter as much as the results we deliver.”
Analyzing Levante as an Opponent
Valverde anticipates a formidable challenge against Levante, noting their recent performances could make them more resilient. “They have a strong defense and possess fast, skilled players who can create opportunities. This will be a very uncomfortable and difficult match,” he acknowledged.
Recent Achievements and Future Challenges
The coach also reflected on their recent win in Valencia, which secured them a spot in yet another Copa del Rey semifinal—the sixth in the last seven seasons. He characterized this achievement as both an “incredible opportunity” and a “boost of joy” for the team. Valverde remarked on the importance of perseverance, emphasizing the necessity to seek fortune as they aim for victory again.
Looking Ahead: The Semi-Final
Regarding the forthcoming Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad, Valverde believes the match will be thrilling for fans. “It brings back difficult memories, and it will be challenging with added tension, as it is a semifinal,” he noted, referring to the recent draw held in Madrid.
Valverde reiterated that the team is focused solely on the upcoming match against Levante, pushing the consideration of the Real Sociedad clash to the following week. “From Monday onwards, we will shift our focus to that match,” he concluded.
