Imane Khelif Agrees to Genetic Test for LA Olympics, Sets Condition

Imane Khelif, the reigning gold medalist in women’s welterweight boxing, has agreed to undergo genetic testing mandated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This decision comes as she prepares to defend her title at the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Background on Khelif’s Controversy

Khelif’s journey to the Olympics has been tumultuous. She won her gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games amidst ongoing debates about her eligibility. The International Boxing Association (IBA) previously disqualified her from the 2023 World Championships due to sex chromosome testing, which triggered a significant gender dispute.

Genetic Testing Requirement

Following changes in regulations, World Boxing announced last May that all competitors must undergo mandatory sex testing. Since then, Khelif has faced restrictions from participating in any events under the organization’s jurisdiction until she complies with genetic testing.

Khelif’s Position on Testing

Despite initially appealing the requirement at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Khelif has expressed her willingness to comply, provided the IOC administers the tests. “Of course, I would accept doing anything I’m required to do to participate in competitions,” she remarked during an interview.

She emphasized the importance of fairness in sports, saying, “They should protect women, but they need to pay attention that while protecting women, they shouldn’t hurt other women.” Khelif stands firm on her identity, asserting, “I’m not transgender. I’m a woman. I want to live my life.”

World Boxing’s Apology and Khelif’s Future

World Boxing previously issued an apology for publicly naming Khelif when announcing the testing requirements. However, the 26-year-old athlete remains determined to pursue justice, stating, “I will not surrender until I have justice because I know justice is on my side above all else.”

As the date for the Los Angeles Olympics approaches, Khelif’s situation underscores the ongoing discussions surrounding gender identity and fairness in sports, making her compliance with the genetic testing a focal point of interest ahead of the competition.
