YouTube Music Now Locks Lyrics Behind Premium Subscription
YouTube Music has introduced a significant change by implementing a paywall for lyrics access. Users now need a Premium subscription to view lyrics fully. This move follows extensive testing over recent months and marks a new phase in the platform’s monetization strategy.
YouTube Music Premium Lyrics Access
The latest update includes a feature that limits lyrics access to YouTube Premium and Music Premium subscribers. Once the update is active on an account, a notification appears on the Now Playing screen. Users will see a message stating: “You have [x] views remaining” and “Unlock lyrics with Premium.”
Limits on Free Access
Currently, users are allowed to view lyrics for free only five times. After that, the lyrics become partially visible. Users will only see the opening lines, while the remainder is blurred and cannot be scrolled.
Subscription Costs and Features
- YouTube Music Premium (in the US) costs $10.99 per month.
- YouTube Premium, which includes benefits across the YouTube app, is priced at $13.99.
Both subscriptions offer features like ad-free playback, background listening, offline downloads, and AI functions, including Ask Music.
Impact on Monetization
This change aligns with Google’s broader strategy to enhance revenue from its services. Recently, the company reported over 325 million subscription users across various platforms, demonstrating strong growth for YouTube Premium and other services.
In 2025, revenue from YouTube ads and subscriptions surpassed $60 billion, indicating the platform’s significant contribution to Google’s overall financial health.
