U.S. Travel Decline Expected to Persist
The decline in travel to the United States is projected to continue, particularly among Swiss tourists. Despite favorable financial conditions with a weak dollar against the Swiss franc, the number of visitors from Switzerland is expected to decrease further.
Travel Decline Statistics
Heinz Zimmermann, chairman of Visit USA (Vusa), forecasts a reduction of about 20-25% in Swiss arrivals for 2026. This would place the total below 300,000. Last year, 361,000 Swiss travelers visited the U.S., marking a 10.6% decline. In contrast, 474,550 Swiss tourists traveled to the U.S. in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Factors Behind the Decline
- The conflicting rational and emotional reasons for travel.
- First-time visitors are particularly hesitant to make plans.
- Repeat visitors continue to travel despite the decline.
Travel agencies in Zurich gathered recently to explore American attractions. This event, organized by Visit USA, aims to keep the U.S. in the minds of Swiss travelers. Zimmermann emphasized the importance of maintaining visibility in this market, though it is small.
Impact of U.S. Leadership on Tourism
David O’Donnell, communications vice president at Meet Boston, noted that the perception of the U.S. has significantly worsened. Policies under former President Donald Trump have negatively influenced international tourism. The East Coast cities, including Boston, typically oppose Trump’s stance.
The Economic Value of Swiss Tourists
Boston sees around 25,000 Swiss visitors annually, with 75% traveling for leisure. These tourists possess high purchasing power, spending an average of $295 (CHF 230) per day, excluding accommodation and airfare. Boston aims to leverage its hosting role in the upcoming football World Cup to boost tourism, but also seeks to promote year-round activities.
Booking Challenges
Airlines report challenges in summer bookings for the U.S. Edelweiss indicated a decline in reservations among Swiss travelers due to geopolitical tensions. As most U.S. routes serve the spring and summer markets, overall booking figures remain low, complicating accurate projections for the summer season.
