Clarkston School Organizes Blood Drive for Student with Rare Bone Marrow Disease
A blood drive held at Independence Elementary School in Clarkston, Michigan, recently demonstrated community support for a young girl in need. The event aimed to assist nine-year-old Liv O’Connell, a fourth grader diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anemia—a rare bone marrow disease.
Supporting a Young Life
Liv’s condition requires blood transfusions every three weeks, as her body struggles to produce red blood cells. Her mother, Megan O’Connell, explained the importance of these transfusions for Liv’s survival. “Without blood, she would not be able to live,” she noted.
Liv’s Resilient Spirit
Despite the challenges of her illness, Liv exhibits a vibrant and active demeanor. “It doesn’t affect me that much,” she remarked, adding that after receiving blood, she often feels more energetic.
Community Involvement
- Students at Independence Elementary contributed to the event by creating bracelets and decorating the school with signs.
- The initiative was organized in collaboration with the American Red Cross.
- Community member Matthew Johnson expressed his willingness to support the cause by donating blood.
Liv’s friend, Ava Duffy, shared her admiration for Liv’s resilience. “It means a lot to see her laugh and strive through life,” Duffy stated.
The Need for Awareness
According to the Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation, 25 to 35 children in the United States are diagnosed with this condition each year. While Liv’s brother Miles also has the disease, he does not require transfusions. However, for Liv, these are crucial to her daily functioning and zest for life.
Megan O’Connell praised her daughter’s numerous activities, stating, “She’s a skier, a cheerleader, a dancer, a gymnast.”
Giving Back
Liv is not only grateful for the support but also dedicated to raising awareness. “We’re doing this to help kids like me because they need blood to live,” she expressed.
The blood drive at Independence Elementary exemplified the powerful impact of community solidarity in the face of health challenges. Liv O’Connell’s story highlights the importance of support systems in helping individuals navigate rare and serious health conditions.
