Cattle Wagon Museum Highlights Kosovo Albanian Deportations

In Kosovo, a significant initiative has been launched to remember the deportations of Albanians during the 1999 conflicts. This project emphasizes the historical relevance of a cattle wagon used for deportations, encapsulating the collective memories of those who endured these events. The endeavor coincides with the establishment of a new museum dedicated to these experiences.

Key Partners in the Project

Several organizations are collaborating to bring this memorial to fruition. Among them, the Municipality of Pristina plays a vital role, as it served as the starting point for many refugee trains. The Municipality of Hani i Elezit is also contributing to the creation of a museum in Bllace, where over 400,000 refugees passed through during NATO’s intervention against Yugoslavia.

Transport and Installation Efforts

  • Company: Sigma
  • Location: Pristina, Kosovo
  • Service Provided: Transport of the cattle wagon

Sigma, a local company renowned for its crane operations, managed the transportation of the historical railway wagon to Pristina without charging any fees. This act underscores the community’s dedication to honoring the past.

Personal Connections to History

Bajram Sylejmani, co-owner of Sigma, has a deeply personal connection to this project. At just two months old, his family was forced onto a deportation train. Sylejmani has vowed that they will contribute everything possible to support the museum’s efforts.

The Importance of Memory

Naser Krasniqi, CEO of Infrakos, articulated the deeper meaning behind the wagon. It is not merely a structure; it stands as a “living museum of memories.” Krasniqi believes it represents the voices of those who suffered during this traumatic period.

He stated, “It is a testimony. A living museum of memories that we dare not forget.” Krasniqi highlighted the necessity of educating future generations about these events to prevent similar tragedies from occurring. This initiative aims to honor the victims while promoting the significance of remembrance and reconciliation.
