Viktor Hovland has expressed satisfaction with the return of Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed to the PGA Tour. He appreciates competing against top players, highlighting how their presence enhances the competition. However, Hovland acknowledges the challenges the PGA Tour faces amid these changes.

Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed’s Return to the PGA Tour

Koepka and Reed both signed lucrative contracts with LIV Golf in 2022. Their re-entry into the PGA Tour is through different avenues. Koepka secured his return via the Returning Member Program, designed for four specific players. Reed will return following a one-year suspension that ends in mid-August.

The Implications for the PGA Tour

Hovland pointed out the tricky position the PGA Tour finds itself in. He remarked on the potential precedent set by allowing players to return from rival tours without significant consequences. Hovland does not wish to delve too deeply into the Tour’s future decisions. Instead, he focuses on his own game.

Koepka retains full tour status due to his 2023 PGA Championship victory.
Reed will return as a past champion.
Both players are ineligible for player equity grants until 2030.
Koepka made a $5 million charitable donation as part of his return.

Hovland’s Personal Tournament Preparations

This week, Hovland is preparing for the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. He has been testing two drivers, specifically the new Ping G440 K. Hovland switched from the G425 LST to the G440 LST last year due to improved spin consistency and speed.

Although the G440 driver launched higher than he preferred, he continues to adjust. After a challenging practice session, Hovland asked his Ping representative for a shorter shaft version of the G440 K to enhance playability.

Despite speculation around LIV and the recent returns, Hovland remains focused on his game. He acknowledges the evolving landscape of competitive golf while prioritizing his performance at upcoming tournaments.
