Graham Steele, a former assistant secretary for financial institutions, remarked that Treasury officials usually maintain a distance from direct political clashes. Steele emphasized the need for the department to preserve its economic stature internationally while collaborating with the White House.
Bessent has exhibited increasing aggression towards Democratic figures recently. His disparaging comments about California Governor Gavin Newsom and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren have garnered attention. Bessent referred to Newsom as “economically illiterate” and likened him to a fictional character known for violence.

Experts suggest that Bessent’s combative nature reflects the current political climate. David Lublin, a political science chair at American University, noted that President Trump’s style has influenced his appointees, promoting a more aggressive stance. Lublin observed, “What used to be the normal modicum of respect for Congress has frayed to the point of vanishing.” Moreover, Bessent’s remarks on monetary policy deviated from established norms, as he appeared to endorse Trump’s interference in such decisions.
Looking ahead, Bessent is scheduled for another appearance. He will present before the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, addressing the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s annual report, which he leads. This upcoming session is expected to continue the heated discourse seen in the House.
