CMCSS Cancels Classes Thursday and Friday, Extending Closure to Second Week
Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools (CMCSS) will extend its closure until Friday, resulting in a total of two weeks off due to hazardous conditions caused by a recent winter storm.
Impact of Winter Storm on CMCSS
The decision to cancel classes on Thursday and Friday is primarily due to lingering ice. According to CMCSS spokesman Anthony Johnson, the weather conditions remain unsafe for both students and staff.
Weather Conditions and Safety Concerns
Despite recent rain, temperatures have not been favorable for ice melting. Johnson noted that the combination of low temperatures and ice has created slick, dangerous surfaces across many roads.
- Thursday and Friday: CMCSS closed.
- Weather conditions expected to improve by Friday afternoon with highs in the mid-50s.
- Overnight temperatures will remain below freezing, creating potential hazards.
Johnson emphasized that, while most roads have been cleared, certain areas remain challenging for travel. He indicated the importance of safety in making the decision to keep schools closed.
Professional Development and Remote Learning
Teachers scheduled for a Professional Development Day on Wednesday shifted to remote learning due to inadequate parking lot conditions. The slick surfaces hindered safe access to school buildings.
Support for Families in Need
CMCSS understands that closures impact many working families. Johnson assured parents that the school leadership is aware of their concerns regarding these extended closures and is committed to resuming normal operations as soon as it is safe to do so.
Community and Support Efforts
Johnson expressed gratitude for the ongoing efforts of local crews and city services assisting with snow and ice removal. Their expertise in challenging conditions is essential for ensuring a safe return to school.
Future Plans and Stockpile Days
With the state waiver approved, CMCSS had three stockpile days remaining prior to this extension. After Thursday and Friday’s closures, only one stockpile day will remain, eliminating the need for a make-up plan.
CMCSS will continue to monitor weather conditions closely and provide updates to families regarding any further changes or reopening plans.
