Archdiocese of Milan Launches Prayer Initiative for 2026 Winter Olympians

The Archdiocese of Milan has initiated a prayer program leading up to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Titled “For Each Other,” this initiative aims to provide athletes a space to pray and reflect during the competitive period, ensuring their spiritual needs are met alongside their physical pursuits.

Details of the Initiative

Launched during a press conference on January 23, the initiative will coincide with significant upcoming events:

  • 2026 Winter Olympics: February 6-22
  • 2026 Paralympics: March 6-15

Archbishop Mario Delpini of Milan emphasized the need to counteract the commercialization and excessive competitiveness often associated with sports. He noted that athletes are not merely bodies striving for excellence but also individuals with souls and relationships.

Collaborations and Key Figures

The Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education supports the “For Each Other” program. Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça highlighted the church’s role in promoting a spirit of authentic sportsmanship, focusing on the common good rather than individualism.

Program Activities

The initiative will run from January 29 to mid-March, featuring a range of communal activities and events across Milan’s parishes:

  • Opening Mass on January 29 at the Basilica of San Babila
  • Involvement of approximately 13,000 youth from local schools and sports clubs
  • Exhibitions and workshops focused on Olympic values: excellence, friendship, and respect
  • Volunteer-led tours of historically significant churches

During the opening Mass, the “Cross of Sportspeople,” blessed by Pope Francis in 2013, will be entrusted to the archdiocese. This cross has been previously placed in cities hosting the Olympics, including London and Paris.

Community Engagement

The archdiocese aims to establish two “Values Villages” reflecting Olympic principles. Additionally, multilingual Sunday Masses will cater to international visitors and athletes, emphasizing inclusivity during the Games.

Archbishop Delpini expressed his pride in Milan’s commitment to supporting athletes through solidarity and accessibility. He believes that the “For Each Other” initiative exemplifies the city’s dedication to enhancing the Olympic experience for all participants.
