Block All Generative AI Features in Firefox Soon
Mozilla has announced significant changes to Firefox, allowing users to manage generative AI features within the browser. This update is set to begin with Firefox 148, which will be available on February 24. The new AI controls will enable users to block all AI enhancements or fine-tune their preferences for individual features.
New AI Controls in Firefox 148
In the upcoming version of Firefox, users can access a dedicated section in the browser settings for AI controls. The primary option will be a toggle labeled “Block AI enhancements.” By enabling this setting, users can completely disable notifications for existing and future AI features.
Individual Feature Management
Beyond blocking all AI features, users can manage specific enhancements. The features available for control include:
- Translations for browsing in preferred languages
- AI-generated alt text in PDFs
- AI-enhanced tab grouping
- Link previews
- Firefox’s AI chatbot integration
Users can choose to keep or disable these features according to their preferences.
Mozilla’s Commitment to User Choice
This initiative comes in response to user feedback. Mozilla acknowledged that while some users prefer to avoid AI, others find AI tools beneficial. “AI is changing the web, and people want very different things from it,” the company stated in a blog post, emphasizing its commitment to offering choices to its community.
Leadership Changes and Future Investments
This announcement follows the appointment of Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as Mozilla’s CEO in December. Enzor-DeMeo mentioned that Mozilla plans to invest in AI technologies but will ensure that users have the ability to opt-in or out of these tools. He stated, “AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off.”
As the browser market evolves, Mozilla aims to establish a balance between innovation and user preference. The company is also seeking to build partnerships with tech startups and developers to ensure AI transparency and accountability.
Financial Commitment to Transparency
Reports indicate that Mozilla is prepared to allocate approximately $1.4 billion to support initiatives promoting AI transparency and countering the rapid growth of major AI players like OpenAI and Anthropic. The goal is to navigate the changing landscape while maintaining a focus on user trust and ethics in technology.
