Music Millennium, Pacific Northwest’s Oldest Record Store, Seeks New Owner
Music Millennium, known as the oldest record store in the Pacific Northwest, is actively seeking a new owner. With a rich history spanning 57 years, this beloved Portland establishment has become a cornerstone of the local music culture.
Legacy of Music Millennium
Founded in 1969, Music Millennium started as a modest 800-square-foot store. Today, it occupies a full building at the corner of East Burnside Street and Southeast 32nd Avenue. This makes it the largest and oldest independent record store in the region.
Terry Currier’s Leadership
Terry Currier, who has been at the helm since 1996, is looking for a successor. Currier, who has been managing the store since 1984, expressed his passion for the business despite his recent milestone of turning 70. He emphasized the need for a passionate music fan to continue the legacy of Music Millennium.
Currier has stated, “I’m as excited about Music Millennium today as I was on my first day.” He wants the store to remain a significant part of Portland’s landscape. Throughout his tenure, Currier has turned down multiple offers from developers interested in purchasing the building.
Opportunities for Prospective Owners
Currier is open to selling either the business and the building together or the business separately with a long-term lease on the building. He is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the new owner and is ready to share his extensive knowledge of running Music Millennium.
Currier’s Contributions to Music
Besides managing Music Millennium, Currier has made significant contributions to the national record store scene. He founded the Coalition of Independent Music Stores in 1995 and co-founded the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2004. His involvement extends to regional music organizations, including the Cascade Blues Association and Portland Jazz Festival.
In recognition of his contributions, the city of Portland declared August 12 as “Terry Currier Day” in 2017. His dedication to music has played a crucial role in shaping both the store and the local music community.
