Hertfordshire Train Services Halt in March for Improvement Works

On March 15, 2023, train services in Hertfordshire will experience interruptions due to necessary improvement works. Passengers traveling on Thameslink and Great Northern routes between Potters Bar and Letchworth, as well as between Hertford North and Stevenage, will face cancellations.

Details of the Disruption

This disruption is part of the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), which involves digital signalling testing on the East Coast Main Line. The testing will occur between Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin. The £1.4 billion ECDP aims to enhance reliability, sustainability, and safety in train operations.

Amended Services and Replacement Options

To mitigate the impact on travelers, several amended train services and rail replacement bus options will be available on the affected day:

  • Train services will operate between:
    • St Neots and Peterborough
    • Letchworth and Cambridge or King’s Lynn
    • London King’s Cross and Potters Bar
    • Moorgate and Potters Bar or Hertford North
    • Finsbury Park and Brighton
  • Replacement bus services will run between:
    • Hertford North and Stevenage via Watton at Stone
    • Luton Airport Parkway and Stevenage
    • Potters Bar and Hitchin
    • St Albans City and Stevenage via Hatfield
    • St Neots and Hitchin
    • St Neots and Bedford

Passenger Guidelines

Network Rail advises travelers using rail replacement services to bring only manageable luggage. Passengers are also urged to consider transfer times between train and bus or coach.

Official Statements

Gunnar Lindahl, joint operations director for Network Rail East Coast and LNER, stated, “We’re carrying out a significant package of upgrades on the East Coast Main Line this March to keep trains running safely and reliably for the millions of passengers who depend on the route.”

Daniel Mann, director of industry operations at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the hard work of railway staff. He requested passengers to show kindness and respect during the service changes.

As the improvements continue, passengers are encouraged to plan accordingly and remain patient. These changes aim to contribute to a more efficient rail network in the future.
