Chad Grenier, the CEO of Highguard, recently emphasized that the number of players is not a priority for the game. Instead, he focused on creating a game that players will truly enjoy. Wildlight Entertainment, composed of about 60 former developers from Apex Legends and Titanfall, discussed their creative process. The team experimented with various shooter concepts before establishing Highguard’s unique gameplay format.

Unique Game Experience

According to Grenier, Highguard offers a distinct gaming experience that sets it apart from existing titles. He stated, “I don’t think that there’s a game out there that is like ours.” This assertion highlights the team’s commitment to innovation in the competitive shooter genre.

Challenges and Reception

Despite initial positive reactions, Highguard faced challenges with player count and viewer engagement on platforms like Twitch. Negative reviews have surfaced on Steam, prompting concerns over the game’s reception.

Grenier argued that the studio prioritizes player satisfaction over mere numbers. He said, “Whether it gets a thousand people or a hundred million people, it doesn’t matter.” This philosophy underscores their goal of cultivating a devoted player base.

Highguard’s gameplay is structured into multiple phases: a fortifying phase, a looting phase, and a raiding phase. Recently, a permanent 5v5 mode was introduced, further expanding gameplay options.

After transitioning from Respawn Entertainment, Wildlight Entertainment aimed to break free from the constraints associated with the success of Apex Legends. Lead designer Mohammad Alavi noted the creative freedom that comes with being an independent studio.
