Jean-Pierre Laparra has deep roots in Verdun, a city with profound historical significance. His passion for community service is influenced by his family’s history. Both his grandfather and father were dedicated to serving others, firmly anchoring his commitment to the region.

Community Involvement Since 1969

Laparra began his career in 1969 with PTT and later transitioned to Orange, always remaining close to Verdun. His connection to the region is evident, especially considering his grandfather lived in Fleury-devant-Douaumont during World War I. This familial bond with history has shaped his identity and commitment to the local community.

Honoring History

His father’s departure from Fleury-devant-Douaumont led to Laparra stepping into various roles in community organizations. Currently, he serves as the president of Verdun Expo, a position he has held since 1996. In 2000, he joined the municipal commission, becoming a steward of local history. He shares his grandfather’s stories with tourists and school groups, passionately preserving the village’s legacy.

A Journey to Mayor

After the sudden passing of the mayor in 2008, Laparra accepted the interim role, later officially applying for the position. Initially, he viewed this appointment as an honor but soon understood the complexities of managing the town’s heritage, safety, and welcoming visitors.

His leadership has been marked by significant events, including the 90th anniversary of the Armistice with President Sarkozy, and welcoming François Hollande and Angela Merkel in 2016 for the centenary of the Battle of Verdun.

Future Aspirations

As local elections approach, Laparra is eager to improve visitation experiences and develop new landscape structures. He expresses a steadfast dedication to community service, reflecting on the constant uncertainties of decision-making in his volunteer work. Each visit to Fleury-devant-Douaumont serves as a moment of reflection.

Five Decades of Commitment

For over fifty years, Laparra has actively participated in various associations. His journey began with the local shooting society and progressed through various leadership roles at the Verdun Youth and Culture Center. His long-standing presidency of Verdun Expo has transformed the event into a premier gathering, attracting over 46,000 visitors and 450 exhibitors annually.
