Zerella Expands with New Potato Farm in Northern Territory

Zerella Holdings is making a significant move by expanding its operations with a new potato farm in the Northern Territory. This development signifies a potential resurgence of commercial potato production in the region after a long absence of about 20 years.

Zerella’s Plans for the Northern Territory

The company has applied to clear approximately 210 hectares of land at its Eagle Park property, located near Katherine, south of Darwin. This area will be used for irrigated potato production and the necessary infrastructure.

Production Goals

  • The farm will focus on producing seed potatoes.
  • These seed potatoes are essential for growing the commercially harvestable crop.
  • The operation supports Zerella’s broader 50,000-hectare farming initiative in the Mallee region of South Australia.

General Manager Renee Pye stated that the Katherine region has been identified as optimal for alleviating pressure from their southern farms. “The Katherine operation is designed to enhance our production through an additional seed rotation,” she explained. This strategic approach aims to maximize efficiency during the growing season.

Timing and Challenges

Zerella plans to embark on planting activities in April, pending the completion of essential infrastructure improvements, including a new shed and power upgrades. Pye emphasized that planting would be scheduled according to the dry season, avoiding the difficulties presented by the wet season.

Community Response and Historical Context

The agricultural community in the Northern Territory has been buzzing with curiosity and speculation regarding the return of potato farming. Historically, the region has not seen commercial potato cultivation for many years, which raises numerous questions among local farmers.

Previous Attempts

  • Mike Braun, a flower grower in Darwin, attempted potato farming in the late 1990s.
  • Despite favorable dry season conditions, Braun abandoned the endeavor due to inadequate prices and competition.
  • He ultimately deemed the venture non-viable after a few years of farming.

As Zerella Holdings seeks to establish its Northern Territory potato farm, its success could revitalize local agricultural opportunities. The region, known for its mango and cattle production, may soon rebloom as a viable site for potato farming.
