Anthony Weaver Set to Rejoin Ravens as Defensive Coordinator
The Baltimore Ravens are set to elevate Anthony Weaver to the position of defensive coordinator, according to reports from ESPN. Weaver, aged 45, is making his return to Baltimore after a two-season tenure as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.
Anthony Weaver’s Background and Experience
This will mark Weaver’s third role with the Ravens. He played as a defensive end for the team from 2002 to 2005 and later served as the defensive line coach from 2021 to 2023.
- Previous Role: Defensive Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins (2 seasons)
- Playing Career: Defensive End for the Baltimore Ravens (2002-2005)
- Coaching Career: Defensive Line Coach for the Ravens (2021-2023)
Coaching Changes in Baltimore
In his first press conference, new Ravens head coach Jesse Minter announced he would call the defensive plays, while Weaver will officially hold the title of defensive coordinator. Weaver takes over from Zach Orr, who had a challenging two years in the position.
Defensive Performance
Last season, Baltimore’s defense ranked 24th in the NFL, marking only the third instance in 25 years where the team finished in the league’s bottom half. In contrast, during Weaver’s first season with Miami, the Dolphins achieved a ranking of No. 5 in total defense, despite featuring just one Pro Bowler, cornerback Jalen Ramsey. However, the following season saw Miami’s defense fall to a disappointing No. 22 in yards allowed.
Weaver’s Previous Head Coach Aspirations
During the current offseason, Weaver was among the finalists for the Ravens’ head coach position, alongside Jesse Minter and former Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. He also sought head coaching opportunities with four other teams: the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Staff Additions
Weaver’s hiring as defensive coordinator is part of a broader restructuring of the coaching staff, which also includes the recent appointment of Declan Doyle as offensive coordinator. Doyle previously held the same role with the Chicago Bears.
With Anthony Weaver rejoining the Ravens, the team hopes to revitalize its defensive strategies and improve its performance on the field in the upcoming season.
