In a shocking development, Nepalese authorities have apprehended six executives involved in a fraudulent mountain rescue scheme. These individuals are accused of orchestrating fake rescues to defraud international insurance companies out of approximately $20 million.

Arrests Made in Fraudulent Rescue Scandal

The arrests took place last week, conducted by Nepal’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), which revealed the involvement of multiple travel and rescue operators. All six arrested are Nepali nationals.

Details of the Fraudulent Claims

  • The accused are alleged to have submitted fake claims from 2022 to 2025.
  • Among one rescue company, 171 of the 1,248 claimed rescues were fabricated, leading to over $10 million in unjustified payouts.
  • Another company is implicated in fabricating 75 out of 471 claims, resulting in an alleged $8 million fraud.
  • A third operator is accused of making 71 fake claims for over $1 million.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the racket. CIB spokesperson Shiva Kumar Shrestha stated that the operation utilized fake documents, including rescue flight manifests, hospital bills, and medical reports to deceive insurance companies.

Impact on Nepal’s Climbing Community

Nepal attracts thousands of climbers annually, drawn to its majestic Himalayan peaks. Many climbers face perilous conditions, leading to rescues from extreme exhaustion or altitude sickness.

The challenging terrain and limited medical facilities often necessitate costly helicopter rescues to transport patients to Kathmandu for treatment. To secure climbing permits, high-altitude climbers must provide proof of insurance that covers helicopter rescue.

This fraudulent scheme raises significant concerns about the integrity of rescue operations in Nepal, emphasizing the need for stricter oversight and regulation in the adventure tourism sector.
