Renowned chef and documentarian Anthony Bourdain once declared The French Laundry as “the best restaurant in the world, period.” This prestigious establishment is located in Napa Valley, famously known as wine country. Opened in 1978, The French Laundry has become a culinary landmark under the ownership of chef Thomas Keller, who has been celebrated for his innovative cuisine.
The French Laundry: A Culinary Icon
The French Laundry earned a prestigious three-star Michelin rating, distinguishing it as one of the elite dining experiences globally. Bourdain experienced the restaurant’s famed creations during a visit in 2002 for his show “A Cook’s Tour.” His excitement for the visit was palpable, reminiscent of a “16-year-old girl on her way to a first date.”
A Memorable Culinary Journey
On this memorable occasion, Bourdain was joined by three industry friends, including the celebrated chef Eric Ripert. The evening featured a lavish tasting menu consisting of approximately 20 courses, with dishes designed to evoke strong memories. Among the highlights was a Marlboro-infused coffee custard, a personal nod to Bourdain’s smoking habit.

The evening began with striking cornets topped with red onion crème fraîche and salmon tartare, mimicking the appearance of an ice cream cone. Other standout dishes included:

In a 2010 interview with Mother Jones, Bourdain described the meal as possibly “the greatest restaurant meal of [his] life.”
Renovations and Current Status
Since Bourdain’s visit, The French Laundry has undergone a significant transformation. From 2014 to 2017, the restaurant underwent a $10 million renovation influenced by the Louvre Pyramid’s aesthetic. Architectural firms Snøhetta and Envelope A+D worked with Keller to expand the kitchen by 25% and design a modern courtyard.

The renovation also introduced a 15,000-bottle wine cellar, enhancing the restaurant’s connection to its wine country roots. Today, dining at The French Laundry remains a luxurious and exclusive experience. Reservations are available for $425 per person, featuring daily tasting menus that include dishes like hen egg custard, white truffle lasagna, and charcoal-grilled wagyu.
