Over 180,000 residents in the Denver area experienced significant power outages on Sunday, leaving many in the dark, according to utility officials.
Extent of Power Outages in the Denver Region
As of 4 p.m. on Sunday, multiple counties reported substantial outages:
- Arapahoe County: 23,416 customers
- Douglas County: 20,242 customers
- Elbert County: 691 customers
- Adams County: 1 customer
Core Electric Cooperative announced these figures, while Xcel Energy confirmed an affected number approaching 145,000 customers, a figure that was in constant fluctuation as crews worked to manage the situation.
Cause of the Outages
The cause of these widespread outages remains uncertain. Michelle Aguayo, a spokesperson for Xcel Energy, indicated that the issue originated from one of their substations. Crews were promptly deployed to assess and address the outage.
“We appreciate our customers’ patience as our crews work as quickly as possible to safely restore power,” Aguayo stated in an email.
Impact on Denver International Airport
The power issue also caused disruptions at Denver International Airport. Trains connecting the airport’s concourses faced interruptions, along with various other systems. Airport officials reported that crews were actively working to restore services as of 3:49 p.m.
