Atlas Provinces to Experience Mercury Drop to -6°C This Tuesday
The Moroccan meteorological authorities have issued an orange alert due to a severe winter storm expected from Monday to Wednesday. This warning highlights the potential for violent winds, heavy snowfall, and plummeting temperatures across various regions, particularly affecting the Northern and Oriental provinces.
Extreme Weather Conditions Forecasted
Starting from midnight on Monday, gusts of wind are anticipated to reach between 75 and 90 km/h, impacting cities like Tanger, Al Hoceima, Tétouan, and Oujda. This powerful wind will continue until midday.
- Wind Speed: 75 – 90 km/h
- Regions Affected: Northern provinces and Oriental regions
In addition to the wind, torrential rain is predicted, with thunderstorms expected to bring between 50 and 80 mm of rainfall along the northern coast and the Rif. These rains could convert roads into temporary streams, especially in the provinces of Larache, Chefchaouen, and Taounate.
Significant Snowfall in the Atlas Mountains
As the storm progresses, snow accumulation will transform the landscape in the mountains. From elevations of 1,500 meters and above, a significant snow cover is expected.
- Snow Accumulation:
- Ifrane, Sefrou, Midelt, and Beni Mellal: 20 – 40 cm
- Azilal and Al Haouz: 10 – 20 cm
This extensive snowfall may disrupt daily life in high-altitude areas. The combination of heavy snow and wind poses a risk for residents and travelers alike.
Sharp Temperature Drop
By Tuesday, temperatures are predicted to drop significantly, ranging between -6°C and 0°C in the Atlas region and its plateaus. Locations such as Midelt, Tinghir, and Ouarzazate can expect a sharp contrast to the previous day’s warmer weather.
- Temperature Range: -6°C to 0°C
- Areas Affected: Atlas Mountains and adjacent plateaus
The calm weather experienced the day prior will quickly give way to frigid conditions, necessitating vigilance from the public.
Public Safety Recommendations
Authorities stress the importance of caution during this severe weather event. Reduced visibility due to snow and fog will affect road conditions and pose risks for drivers. Furthermore, maritime conditions are expected to be turbulent along the coast, which could endanger sailors.
Morocco is bracing for 72 hours of intense winter weather, urging all residents to stay alert and prepared for possible disruptions caused by this extreme weather system.
