Why I’m Exiting The Great British Baking Show: The Real Reason
After nearly a decade as a judge on The Great British Baking Show, a personal decision has led to my exit. My tenure began when I was in my mid-seventies. At the time, I expected to last only a couple of years. However, a passion for the role and a good state of mind kept me engaged longer than anticipated.
Reasons for Leaving The Great British Baking Show
The primary motivation behind my departure is a desire for more leisure time. Most filming for the show occurs during the summer, which limited my ability to enjoy vacations. Recently, a remarkable trip to Madagascar made me realize how much I miss summer travels. I found solace on the quiet island of Nosy Komba, where I longed for similar experiences in locations like France and Spain.
The Future of The Great British Baking Show
Nigella Lawson will take my place as a judge. Her impressive baking skills and delightful personality make her an excellent fit for the role, and I believe she will resonate well with viewers.
The Joy of Being a Judge
Reflecting on my time as a judge brings a smile. I never had to memorize lines or prepare extensively. Alongside Paul Hollywood, my role was simple: taste cakes, share opinions, and enjoy the camaraderie. The atmosphere in the tent fostered friendship and support among contestants and crew alike.
- Memorable experiences include:
- Pizza nights with Paul cooking
- Summer activities during the COVID lockdown
- Building friendships with contestants and crew
Though I will miss the thrill of the Bake Off experience, including the excitement of fans and the prestige it brought, I believe I am ready for this new chapter at age 86. I want to balance my professional commitments with personal enjoyment. I look forward to working on other projects, such as Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen for ITV, while keeping my summers free for travel.
