Local Reactions to the Closure

Residents have expressed their concerns about the impact on the community. Bernard and Lesley Bancroft, aged 80 and 72, have changed banks multiple times in recent years and voiced their frustrations. Lesley mentioned the challenges older individuals face when accessing banking services, especially those who struggle with online banking.

Seventy-three-year-old Marilyn Whiting echoed these sentiments, stating that the closure is detrimental to Cwmbran’s local economy. She fears the loss of traditional banking services could further isolate older residents who prefer in-person assistance.

Barrie Page, 76, perceives the closure as an “inconvenience,” particularly since it is the nearest branch to his home in Brynithel. He appreciates face-to-face banking but has also utilized online services. Barrie’s comment reflects a common sentiment among many customers: the need for accessible banking alternatives.

Future of Banking in Cwmbran

Enid Turner, 75, supports the need for multiple banking options in the area. While she utilizes online banking, she believes that physical banking locations provide essential support for those unfamiliar with digital platforms. “It can be puzzling,” she said, highlighting the importance of in-person assistance.

A representative from Santander acknowledged the closure decision as a response to changing customer habits, emphasizing their commitment to both branch and digital services. “We will continue to invest in both our branch network and our digital banking services,” the spokesperson added.

As Cwmbran prepares for the closure, customers must adapt to the evolving landscape of banking services, balancing between online convenience and the need for personal interaction.
