Greg Biffle Not Piloting Plane Before Fatal NASCAR Crash

Investigators have found that retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle was not piloting his private jet when it crashed last month, resulting in the tragic deaths of Biffle, his family, and four others.

Details of the Crash

The crash occurred while the aircraft was attempting to return to Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. According to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the aircraft struck the ground approximately a third of a mile from the runway and erupted into flames.

Flight Crew Qualifications

A seasoned airline pilot, Dennis Dutton, was in control of the aircraft. However, his son, Jack Dutton, seated in the copilot position, lacked the necessary qualifications to serve in that capacity. Both Jack Dutton and Biffle did not possess the specific endorsements required to operate the Cessna C550 as a copilot. Jack Dutton had accumulated only around 175 hours of flight experience.

Control of the plane was temporarily given to the copilot while troubleshooting was attempted. Aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti noted that the absence of a qualified copilot likely contributed to the accident, stating that only trained pilots should operate such aircraft.
