Greg Biffle Not Piloting Plane Before Fatal NASCAR Crash
Investigators have found that retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle was not piloting his private jet when it crashed last month, resulting in the tragic deaths of Biffle, his family, and four others.
Details of the Crash
The crash occurred while the aircraft was attempting to return to Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. According to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the aircraft struck the ground approximately a third of a mile from the runway and erupted into flames.
Flight Crew Qualifications
A seasoned airline pilot, Dennis Dutton, was in control of the aircraft. However, his son, Jack Dutton, seated in the copilot position, lacked the necessary qualifications to serve in that capacity. Both Jack Dutton and Biffle did not possess the specific endorsements required to operate the Cessna C550 as a copilot. Jack Dutton had accumulated only around 175 hours of flight experience.
Problems Encountered
Prior to the crash, the flight crew reported issues with malfunctioning gauges. The NTSB noted that the pilot’s altimeter and other critical instruments were not functioning correctly. Control of the plane was temporarily given to the copilot while troubleshooting was attempted. Aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti noted that the absence of a qualified copilot likely contributed to the accident, stating that only trained pilots should operate such aircraft.
- Flight Issues: Problems with the thrust reverser indicator and altimeter.
- Flight Experience: Jack Dutton had only 175 hours of flying.
Cockpit Communication
During the flight, Jack Dutton communicated via radio, expressing concerns about the issues they were facing. Shortly thereafter, the cockpit voice recorder captured discussions among the pilots, but the audio cut out at pivotal moments.
Investigative Findings
Despite their attempts to rectify the instrument issues, the crew was unable to stabilize the aircraft before the crash. Investigators later found that the throttle was in the full forward position, indicating the pilot may have attempted to climb the plane to avoid the crash.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Biffle’s accomplishments in NASCAR were remembered fondly. He achieved over 50 victories across various NASCAR series and was renowned for his charitable efforts, particularly following Hurricane Helene.
NASCAR Community Honoring Biffle
A public memorial service held in Charlotte celebrated Biffle’s legacy. Hundreds of supporters from the NASCAR community gathered to pay tribute to the accomplished driver.
The investigation into the crash stresses the importance of proper pilot qualifications and vigilant aircraft maintenance. As inquiries continue, the aviation community reflects on the tragic loss of Greg Biffle and those aboard the ill-fated flight.
