Criteriums Replace Surf Coast Classics as Lead-In to Cadel Evans Race

The Surf Coast Classics, initially planned as prelude races to the Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, faced cancellations due to bushfire threats in the Otways region. Nevertheless, organizers are moving forward with the Cadel’s Criterium in Geelong, maintaining the cycling excitement.

Criteriums Replace Surf Coast Classics

The Cadel’s Criterium will take place on a 2km circuit at Eastern Gardens in Geelong. The schedule is as follows:

  • Women’s Race: Starts at 13:00, consisting of 20 laps.
  • Men’s Race: Begins at 14:30, comprising 25 laps.

This familiar format aligns with the experiences of many female riders who participated in the Geelong Classic on the same course in 2024. Race director Scott Sunderland emphasized the priority of safety while expressing enthusiasm for providing elite racing opportunities for fans and teams.

Challenges Due to Weather and Fires

This year’s racing schedule has faced numerous challenges from adverse weather. High temperatures surged over 40°C, significantly impacting events. Key cancellations included:

  • 118 km Women’s Surf Coast Classic
  • 157 km Men’s Surf Coast Classic

Both races were due to bushfire warnings affecting the course areas. Additionally, the men’s Tour Down Under removed the Willunga Hill ascent due to extreme fire risks.

Looking Ahead

While the Otways fire is ongoing, conditions have improved, allowing the Cadel Evans races to proceed as planned. The forecast indicates a temperature of around 28°C for Saturday’s Women’s WorldTour race and a cooler 21°C for the men’s event on Sunday.

Race organizers remain optimistic about the upcoming Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Races. They are committed to ensuring a safe and thrilling experience for all participants and spectators.
