“BC Increases Camping Fees, Adds Surcharge for Out-of-Province Visitors”

British Columbia is set to increase camping fees across 59 popular parks, including 18 located on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Along with these fee hikes, the province will implement a new $20 camping surcharge for visitors from outside British Columbia. This surcharge applies to those using frontcountry campgrounds, backcountry trips, cabin rentals, and mooring slips.

Reasons Behind the Fee Increase

The B.C. government cites a surge in visitor numbers and the impact of extreme weather as significant factors. “As British Columbians, we care deeply about our parks and recreation areas,” said Tamara Davidson, the Minister of Environment and Parks. She emphasized the need for a sustainable model to manage these prized natural spaces effectively.

Since the last fee increase in 2016, park attendance has grown by approximately 30%. Currently, B.C. parks receive over 27 million visits annually.

Details on the New Surcharges

  • The camping surcharge for out-of-province visitors will begin on May 15, 2026.
  • Fees will increase by an average of 40 cents per night during the shoulder season.
  • Summer fees will rise by $13.29 per night.

The following parks on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands will see a fee increase:

  • Bamberton Park
  • Cowichan River Park
