Édouard Confirms Another Disruption in REM Service
Montreal’s light-rail network, Réseau express métropolitain (REM), is facing another disruption. The Édouard-Montpetit station is currently closed due to elevator malfunctions, according to spokesperson Maxime Laliberté. This closure affects commuters, as the station serves as a crucial link near the Université de Montréal.
Current Disruption Details
Édouard-Montpetit station closes indefinitely, posing challenges for passengers. The station sits 70 metres underground and heavily relies on high-speed elevators to transport commuters to the surface. REM teams are actively working to address the elevator issues, Laliberté confirmed.
Additional Service Interruptions
Alongside the station closure, REM experienced further disruptions earlier in the day. Two trains on the tracks were halted, resulting in significant delays for commuters. These disruptions contribute to a concerning trend in service reliability.
Statistics on REM Service Interruptions
Since the launch of the Deux-Montagnes branch in November, the REM has had frequent service interruptions. Data collected by Radio-Canada indicates:
- Service delays of 20 minutes or more occur approximately once every four days.
- Winter conditions have exacerbated the network’s challenges.
Ongoing Challenges
Commuters are feeling frustrated with the network’s unreliability during this winter season. Experts highlight the difficulty in predicting severe weather impacts on transit systems. The REM is working to improve service and minimize disruptions as conditions persist.
