Azerbaijan Detains Islamic State-Linked Terror Cell Near Israeli Embassy in Baku
Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (SSS) has successfully disrupted a planned terrorist attack aimed at the Israeli Embassy in Baku. This announcement came shortly after a visit from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who led a significant business delegation to Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani Authorities Detain Terror Cell
Three Azerbaijani nationals were taken into custody while they approached the embassy as part of their plot motivated by religious animosity. Although the precise timing of the arrests remains undisclosed, authorities confirmed that the operation occurred recently.
Details on the Suspects
The arrested individuals were identified as:
- Guliyev Oglu: Born in 2000, also known as “Abu Zar al-Muhajir”
- Piriev Oglu: Born in 2005, known as “Abdurashid”
- Alizade Oglu: Born in 2005, known as “Abdur-Rahman al-Azari”
These suspects reportedly had connections to the Islamic State terrorist group, specifically its Khorasan Province branch. Azerbaijani security officials indicated that the trio gathered items intended for use as weapons against the embassy.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
The State Security Service noted that the suspects intended to execute a terrorist attack against a “foreign state” in Azerbaijan. Following their detention, a court has extended their custody while the investigation continues.
Azerbaijani security forces have thwarted multiple attempts in recent years aimed at the Israeli Embassy, which is heavily secured. Given its high-profile status, any suspicious activities in its vicinity are immediately addressed by the authorities.
As the investigation evolves, the legal ramifications for the detained individuals will be determined, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s commitment to security against threats from extremist groups.
