Mexico President Urges South Korea for More BTS Shows: ‘Everyone Wants to Attend’

The excitement surrounding K-pop group BTS is palpable in Mexico, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to reach out to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. She formally requested assistance in arranging additional concerts in Mexico, responding to the overwhelming fan demand.

High Demand for BTS Concerts in Mexico

During a recent press conference, Sheinbaum expressed the massive interest among fans. “Everyone wants to go,” she stated, noting that around 1 million young people are eager to buy tickets. In stark contrast, only 150,000 tickets are available for the three scheduled concerts.

Upcoming Tour and Album Release

BTS is set to launch a global tour starting in April, coinciding with the release of their first new album, “Arirang,” in three years. The band has been on hiatus since 2022 due to mandatory military service. This tour has led to heightened competition for concert tickets, especially in Mexico, known for its substantial K-pop fanbase.

Ticketing Issues and Consumer Complaints

The initial ticket sale saw many fans unable to secure their tickets, which prompted numerous complaints to consumer watchdog agencies. The watchdog has since launched an investigation into Ticketmaster and sanctioned resale platforms such as StubHub and Viagogo for what they termed “abusive and disloyal practices.” Details regarding the investigation remain undisclosed.

Ticket Prices and Resale Controversies

  • Ticketmaster prices range from approximately 1,800 to 17,800 pesos (about $100 to $1,030).
  • Resale prices on platforms can reach from 11,300 to 92,100 pesos (over $5,300).

In response to these issues, Mexico’s consumer watchdog agency plans to develop new regulations aimed at improving the transparency and fairness of ticket sales for live events. Guidelines will include fixed prices and venue details before tickets are made available for purchase.

Past Controversies with Ticketmaster

Ticketmaster, owned by Live Nation Entertainment, has faced its share of controversies in Mexico. In 2022, the company reimbursed approximately $1 million to customers after significant issues occurred at a Bad Bunny concert at Estadio Azteca, where many fans were denied entry. At that time, Ticketmaster criticized ticket resellers and called for more stringent control measures.

BTS Concert Schedule in Mexico

The scheduled BTS concerts in Mexico will take place at GNP Seguros Stadium in Mexico City from May 7 to May 10, 2024. As fans eagerly await this event, the quest for additional concerts continues to gain momentum.
