AirTag 2 Launches After 5 Years with Enhanced Range and Louder Speaker

Apple has unveiled the second-generation AirTag, marking its first product launch of the year. This update comes five years after the original AirTag was introduced.

Enhanced Features of the New AirTag 2

The latest AirTag boasts significant upgrades. It is equipped with a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. This enhancement allows users to locate it from up to 50% farther away than its predecessor.

Improved Connectivity and Sound

  • Enhanced Bluetooth capabilities
  • Compatible with Precision Finding on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2
  • New AirTag is 50% louder than the original
  • Updated internal design incorporates a distinctive chime

The Precision Finding feature provides visual, audio, and haptic feedback, facilitating easier tracking. This allows for a more intuitive experience when locating items.

Design and Battery Life

The design of the new AirTag remains unchanged, ensuring compatibility with existing keychains and cases. It features an option for laser engraving, allowing customizations such as initials or emojis. The device continues to use a CR2032 coin-cell battery, which typically lasts about one year before needing replacement.

Tracking Capabilities and Safety Features

AirTags have gained popularity for their utility in tracking personal items. Users often attach them to backpacks, luggage, and even pets, although Apple recommends against tracking living beings.

Apple emphasizes that AirTags are designed exclusively for tracking objects. The new model includes advanced safeguards to prevent unwanted tracking. These safeguards consist of changing Bluetooth identifiers and cross-platform alerts.

AirTag Partnerships for Enhanced Luggage Recovery

Apple has expanded its partnership with over 15 additional airlines. This brings the total to more than 50 airlines collaborating with Apple. The Share Item Location feature allows users to temporarily share the location of their AirTags during travel.

According to SITA, a notable IT provider for airlines, this feature has substantially improved luggage recovery. Reports indicate a 26% reduction in baggage delays and a remarkable 90% decrease in incidents of lost or unrecoverable luggage.

Availability and Pricing

The new AirTag is available for order on Apple.com with pricing identical to the original model. Customers can purchase it for $29 individually or $99 for a four-pack. In-store availability will begin later this week.
