Intel’s Newest Chips Outperform Apple’s M5—But Not for Long

The latest benchmark results have revealed that Intel’s new chips outperform Apple’s M5 in certain tests. However, experts predict this advantage will be short-lived.

Intel’s New Core Ultra Series 3 vs. Apple M5

Testing was conducted on two laptops fitted with Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3 processors. The benchmarks were carried out by Wired’s Luke Larsen.

Benchmark Results

  • MSI Prestige 14 Flip: Equipped with Intel Core Ultra X7 358H
  • Lenovo IdeaPad: Featured Intel Core Ultra X9 388H

In two of three benchmark tests, the Intel chips demonstrated superior performance:

  • Cinebench 24 Multi-Core Score: Intel Core Ultra X9 388H scored 1285, surpassing the M5’s score of 922.
  • 3DMark Steel Nomad Light: The same Intel chip reached 5883, compared to the M5’s 5077.

Future Implications for Intel

Despite these wins, there are concerns for Intel. The new chips still lag behind Apple’s M4 Pro. Future releases, such as the M5 Pro and M5 Max, are expected to outshine Intel’s efforts.

Predictions suggest that the forthcoming M5 Max chip could deliver impressive Geekbench scores, raising the bar for performance.

As a result, while Intel has made strides with its new Core Ultra Series 3, it faces significant challenges ahead from Apple, particularly with the anticipated new MacBook Pro models.
