Bitter Cold Lingers in Upstate NY as Storm Subsides
Syracuse, N.Y. is now recovering from a significant winter storm that recently affected much of the United States. As snowfall subsides, bitter cold is settling in across Upstate New York. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts that this Arctic chill will linger throughout the month.
Bitter Cold Temperatures Expected
The NWS predicts that temperatures will remain below 20 degrees Fahrenheit until at least Saturday. As the storm dissipates, strong winds are likely to reduce visibility on roads. These winds could also contribute to several inches of lake effect snow accumulating north of Syracuse.
Snowfall Records
On Sunday, many parts of Upstate New York received significant snowfall:
- Most areas saw at least 7 inches of snow.
- Some locations reported over a foot of snow.
- Record snowfall was recorded in cities such as Binghamton, Albany, and Rochester.
- Syracuse received 7.7 inches, just shy of the January 25 record of 9.1 inches.
Although the winter storm warning for Central New York has been lifted, many schools and colleges, including the Syracuse school district, remain closed.
The Coldest Week in Years
This week is set to be one of the coldest in Upstate New York in recent years. Daytime temperatures will mostly remain in the teens. Nighttime lows will drop into single digits. Wind chills may even plummet below zero during the first half of the week, marking this as the most severe cold stretch in nearly eight years.
As conditions evolve, residents should remain cautious and prepared for the unrelenting cold and lingering snowfall.
