Severn Trent Increases Signage Amid Roadwork-Induced Traffic Gridlock

The ongoing roadwork by Severn Trent in Birches Head has sparked significant disruptions and traffic gridlock, particularly following the closure of Kelvin Avenue. Residents and community leaders are expressing their frustrations over the chaos caused by this essential £25 million project aimed at upgrading water pipes in the city.

Details of the Severn Trent Project

The project, which began recently, involves the installation of approximately 24 miles of new water pipes across various neighborhoods, including Hanley, Burslem, Smallthorne, Sneyd Green, Birches Head, and Northwood. It is set to continue until early 2027, with the first major disruptions linked to the closure of Kelvin Avenue.

Current Road Closures and Impact

  • Kelvin Avenue is currently closed.
  • Chell Street works will commence on the upcoming Monday.
  • Drivers cannot access Birches Head Road from Hanley.

Ward councillors from Birches Head and Sneyd Green have raised concerns, while Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Gareth Snell has requested an urgent review of the traffic restrictions. He suggested implementing temporary traffic lights at the Northam Road and Hanley Road junction to mitigate the delays.

Community Response and Severn Trent’s Commitment

Severn Trent has assured residents that it is actively listening to their concerns. In a recent statement, the water supplier emphasized its collaboration with the Stoke-on-Trent City Council and other local stakeholders since the project’s inception.

Despite residents’ frustrations, Severn Trent maintains that the short-term disruptions are necessary for long-term benefits. The project aims to reduce water bursts and leaks, thereby enhancing the infrastructure for homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Upcoming Meetings and Communication Efforts

In light of the traffic issues, Severn Trent has increased signage on Birches Head Road to inform motorists of the closure on Kelvin Avenue. A residents’ meeting, initially planned as a drop-in session, was rescheduled at the request of the community. This meeting will now take place on February 3 at The Bridge Centre, from 3 PM to 6:30 PM.

To support local residents, Severn Trent has conducted four community drop-in sessions and provided shuttle bus services. The company remains committed to assessing and adjusting traffic management plans to minimize disruption as much as possible.

Severn Trent urges all motorists to adhere to the placed signage and diversion routes, emphasizing safety as a top priority for everyone involved.
