In Memoriam: Donna Wells Smith-Doucette
Donna Wells of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, passed away on January 24, 2026, at Bobby’s Hospice, surrounded by her family. Born on June 30, 1958, in Newcastle, NB, she was the daughter of the late Evelyn Jennie Melanson and Ernest Doucette. Most of her life was spent in Saint John until she moved to Moncton, then to Langley, BC, before returning to Quispamsis.
Career and Contributions
Donna enjoyed a long career in customer service. She began working at the West Side No Frills and cherished her interactions with customers. Her cheerful demeanor earned her a place in the hearts of many, often telling patrons to “Have a happy day.” In addition to No Frills, she also held positions at Tim Hortons in Moncton and Walmart in Langley. She retired from Atlantic Superstore in Rothesay in July 2023.
Personal Life and Interests
Donna had a passion for gardening and playing cards, often gathering with friends. She was an avid fan of Mickey Mouse, frequently donning themed apparel. A dedicated hockey enthusiast, she proudly supported the Montreal Canadiens, playfully engaging with fans of rival teams.
Christmas was a particularly cherished time for Donna. Her decorations would always go up after Remembrance Day, marking the holiday spirit in her home. She valued family, relishing Sunday dinners and always being available for friends in need.
Courageous Fight Against Cancer
Throughout her battle with cancer, Donna exemplified resilience. She fought valiantly without losing her joy and positivity. In her final months, she found comfort in the Christian community, actively participating in Celebrate Recovery at Kings Church KV.
Survived By
Donna is survived by her daughter Shelley Gowlett, son J.R. Smith, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her siblings, including brothers Ernie and David Doucette, and sisters Gail, Joan, Ann, and Shirley, will also miss her dearly. She leaves behind several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Predeceased by Loved Ones
She was predeceased by her husband John Wells, her stepfather Michael Melanson, and several family members, including her brother Eddie Doucette and grandson Easton Smith.
Gratitude to Caregivers
Donna’s family expresses profound gratitude to Chaplain Donnie Foster for his spiritual support, as well as to Tom and Angie Daly for their unwavering love. Special thanks are also given to the staff at Bobby’s Hospice, Extra-Mural KV, and her medical team for their exceptional care during her courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral Arrangements
Visitation for Donna will be held on January 30, 2026, from 2 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM at Fundy Funeral Home in Saint John. A funeral service is scheduled for January 31, 2026, at 11 AM, followed by burial at a later date.
