Markham Man Showcases Pride with Complete TTC Subway Transfer Collection

Edward Montoya, a 22-year-old civil engineering student from Markham, is making headlines with an ambitious project: collecting paper transfers from every subway station in Toronto. This unique initiative began on January 8, 2023, after Montoya found himself with unexpected free time.

Embarking on the TTC Transfer Challenge

At the suggestion of a friend, Montoya set out to gather paper transfers from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) stations. The challenge kicked off at Don Mills Station, the starting point for Line 4 (Sheppard), the shortest subway line with just five stops. It took him about 30 minutes to navigate this line, collecting his transfers.

Expanding the Journey

Montoya’s journey didn’t stop there. He ventured onto Line 1 (Yonge-University), a 38.4-kilometre line featuring 38 stations, which took nearly five hours to complete. Not deterred by the time commitment, he later tackled Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth) and the new Finch West LRT (Line 6).

  • Line 4: 5 stops
  • Line 1: 38.4 km, 38 stations
  • Line 2: 26.2 km, 31 stations
  • Finch West LRT (Line 6): 10.3 km, 18 stations (no official transfers available)

Challenges and Experiences

During his adventure, Montoya faced various challenges, such as the absence of official transfers for Line 6, prompting him to create his own. Despite experiencing a few odd looks from fellow commuters, he found joy in the hunt for transfers at each station, likening it to a scavenger hunt.

Sharing His Journey

Montoya has documented his progress on Instagram and shared his experiences on platforms like Reddit. He noted that his favorite station is St. Clair West on Line 1 due to its convenient transfers with streetcars and buses. Montoya expressed appreciation for Toronto’s transit system, which offers reliable service compared to options in York Region, where he resides.

Acknowledgment from the TTC

The TTC has praised Montoya’s transfer challenge as a “wonderful display of pride and passion.” Stuart Green, a TTC spokesperson, emphasized the value of public transit in urban life and commended Montoya for his dedication.

Future Plans

Montoya is not stopping with just the collection of transfers. He plans to create a poster displaying his entire collection and is considering a “speedrun” of the TTC subway system, riding every line as quickly as possible. His journey has not only been about collecting transit items but has also deepened his appreciation for Toronto’s comprehensive public transportation network.
