Charlotte Schools Cancel Classes Ahead of Winter Storm Arrival

Winter weather is forcing schools in the Charlotte area to cancel classes and activities ahead of an anticipated storm. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced the cancellation of all weekend field trips, athletic events, and community activities. The storm is expected to deliver a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, leading to an ice storm warning.

Impact of the Winter Storm on Schools

The National Weather Service reports that some regions near Charlotte may see over three-quarters of an inch of ice. Duke Energy warns that as little as a quarter inch of ice can cause tree branches to fall onto power lines. A half-inch could potentially weigh down the lines.

As temperatures are predicted to plummet into single digits by Monday, ice accumulation could persist for several days. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools stated they will monitor the weather conditions and notify the public of any changes to the schedule for the upcoming week.

Plans for Colleges and Universities

Local colleges and universities are also adjusting their schedules in response to the winter weather:

  • Central Piedmont Community College: All Saturday classes will be conducted remotely, and on-campus events are canceled. Classes and events are also canceled on Sunday and Monday, with all campuses closed on those days.
  • UNC Charlotte: All classes and events are canceled starting Saturday at noon through Monday. Residence halls will remain open but with limited dining options.

As the situation develops, schools and universities are prioritizing the safety of students and staff. Parents and students are encouraged to stay informed about any further updates regarding classes and activities. The community will need to prepare for challenging winter conditions in the coming days.
